The environmental education section of the N.C. Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs in the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources was established to increase environmental literacy and natural resource stewardship in North Carolina by encouraging, promoting and supporting environmental education programs, facilities and resources throughout the state.

The New York State Office of General Services (OGS) provides this website for use by institutions and the general public. Its purpose is to offer facility managers, school administrators, educators, parents, and citizens a wealth of free information and tools to promote adoption of effective green cleaning practices, leading to healthier indoor environments.

The NY Department of Environmental Conservation Green School site provides information on green schools curriculum, recognition and awards programs, grant opportunities, and resources for school grounds and facilities management. 

The DEP School Facilities Directory provides school leaders and faculty with convenient access to state and federal requirements, programs, and best practices related to building operations and grounds, new construction, environmental health, indoor and outdoor environmental quality and natural resource management. It is also a useful tool for school representatives who are participating in any of New Jersey's green and sustainable school programs.

The portal provides links to resources, mostly state and federal sites, to help school staff develop their environmental health plan. Some of these topics have specific regulations, and it is especially important for schools to comply with these requirements. The portal also has links to trainings, a newsletter, MDH contacts, and highlighted program areas.

The Michigan Green Schools program was established as a statewide program by Michigan’s Public Act 146 of 2006. It operated as an independent 501c3 organization for 15 years and is now housed within the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Environmental Education Program.

Michigan Green Schools is dedicated to assisting all Michigan schools public and private achieve environmental goals that include protecting the air, land, water and animals of our state through promotion of good ecological practices and environmental stewardship by students pre-kindergarten through high school.

The Maryland Green Schools Program (MDGS) is an award-winning program founded in 1999 which has certified 450 Green Schools.The Program’s goals are to enrich education by integrating hands-on, inquiry-based instruction to empower youth to practically apply knowledge at school, home and in their communities to reduce pollution, decrease waste, increase habitat, limit carbon emissions, as well as create healthy learning and living environments. 

Green Schools, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Massachusetts which develops and distributes resources that help students, schools, and communities engage the next generation of environmental leaders. 

The MSBA’s Green Schools Program provides incentives to a district to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability for new construction and major renovation/addition projects, using either the US Green Building Council’s LEED for Schools or the Massachusetts Collaborative for High Performance Schools criteria.

KGS is a joint program of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education (KAEE) and the Kentucky Environmental Education Council (KEEC). All grade levels of Kentucky public or private schools are invited to join KGS!  Schools are recognized for their efforts through award door plates, certificates, flags, and the invitation to present at KAEE’s annual Outdoor Learning Symposium. 

Through a partnership with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Kansas Green Schools Program was established in 2008.  Through Kansas Green Schools, teachers, administrators, students and parents can:

• Learn about training and conference opportunities for professional development
• Apply for a designation as an official "Kansas Green School" ( COMING SOON!)

Pollution prevention (P2) is any activity—including the use of materials, processes, or practices—that reduces or eliminates the creation of pollutants or waste at the source. Instead of trying to manage the wastes or pollutants through treatment or disposal methods, P2 aims to prevent the initial generation or reduce the toxicity of wastes and pollutants such as hazardous waste, air pollutants, solid waste, wastewater, etc.

The goal of EEinGeorgia.org is to build statewide capacity for environmental education by providing EE lesson plans based on Georgia’s curriculum standards, a searchable directory of Georgia's EE organizations and the resources they offer, a statewide calendar of EE events, EE news, and easy-to-access facts about Georgia's environment. 

Encouraging and implementing environmentally friendly practices at schools is important and can be done in a variety of ways. Whether it is retrofitting an older building with new green technologies, starting a recycling program, implementing green cleaning or packing a waste-free lunch, parents, students, teachers and administrators can all play a role.

The California Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education (AEOE) is a volunteer run 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving outdoor and environmental educators in California, USA. AEOE's mission is to support and inspire educators in their quest for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to help all learners understand, appreciate and care for their environment, especially through direct experience outdoors.
